Family fun at St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Ireland
Every year on the 17th March people of all ages across the world come together to celebrate all things Irish for St Patrick’s Day. Families can find plenty of fun and excitement in Ireland itself this year as celebrations take place throughout the country. With music, parades, treasure hunts and much more, everyone can find something that appeals to them this St Patrick’s Day.
To be in the centre of the all the action, families can plan a trip to Dublin from 12th to 14th March to enjoy the country’s official celebrations. Attractions include one of Ireland’s biggest literary festivals, a treasure hunt – which involves solving clues dotted around the cultural venues of the city – and even a Cuban Salsa festival – Dublin’s first! And, of course, the ultimate ending to the six day celebration comes in the form of the famous St Patrick’s Day parade.
Anyone heading to Belfast, meanwhile, will be immediately swept up in the excitement of the city’s lively St Patrick’s Day Carnival. Among other events, Belfast is also the start point for the 2010 Rith relay run on the 9th of March. Kids and adults alike can join in the fun as thousands take part in the race, carrying a secret message from the Irish President in the relay baton as they go.
Of course, many of Ireland’s smaller cities, towns and villages will also have something to offer families for St Patrick’s. Events will be held right across the country, including in Armagh, Cork, Downpatrick, Killarney, Kiltimagh, Limerick and Sligo.
The whole family will get something out of a trip to Downpatrick in County Down, for example, where they can learn all about Ireland’s Patron Saint at the Saint Patrick Centre. With interactive displays, amazing graphics and reconstructions, the story of Ireland’s Patron Saint is revealed, detailing his history and missionary work in Ireland. Those keen to explore more of St Patrick’s country will find that the Centre also provides an excellent stepping stone.
Whichever village, town or city families decide on as their base for the celebrations, there is no doubt that everyone will have a fantastic time. Book a ticket to visit the stunning Emerald Isle and get prepared to enjoy all of its beauty and hospitality for St Patrick’s Day.
