Independence Day

Independence Day in the United States (commonly known as "the Fourth of July" or "July Fourth") is a holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain.

Independence Day is most often celebrated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, beer, picnics, baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

At the time of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, signer of the Declaration and second president of the United States, wrote these words to his wife Abigail: "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forever more."

What Independence Day Means to Me

Besides Christmas, the celebration of the birth of my Savior, this is perhaps the most important holiday for me during the year. It saddens me to think of those people who take this holiday for granted because everything else we enjoy in this great country hinges on what the founders did during this momentous period in world history. I'm afraid that while many Americans are enjoying their fireworks, parades, barbecues, beer, picnics, baseball games, and other events, there is an insidious movement at work throught our country to dismantle everything accomplished in 1776.
