A Christmas Story Becomes a Holiday Favorite
A Christmas Story is a delightfully funny holiday gem that tells the story of Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsly) a 1940's nine-year-old who pulls out all the stops to obtain the ultimate Christmas present.
A Christmas Story was based on writer Jean Shepherds collection of short stories that were written under the title In God we Trust (All others Pay Cash). Jean Shepherd wrote the screen adaptation and narrated the movie as the main character all grown up. He also has a cameo appearance in the scene where the children go to see Santa at the mall.
This main character is a boy named Ralphie, who wants a Daisy Red Rider 200 shot Carbine Action BB Air Rifle for Christmas. His mother continues to warn him that he will shoot his eye out if he really does receive this gift of his dreams. The movie is set in the 1940s, and deals with the issues of family, holiday traditions, and the trials and tribulations of boyhood. There are many classic scenes in this film, including the event where one of the boys in the movie sticks his tongue to a flag pole after being triple dog dared to do so by his friends.
The movie A Christmas Story came out in theatres in 1983, a week before Thanksgiving. By Christmas, the film had left most theatres, but it has gradually crept up in popularity over the years in DVD sales, earning it the coveted label as a sleeper film. It has now become a family favorite for the Christmas season, and a holiday tradition for many. At the turn of the century, A Christmas Story went on the road as a stage production, which was an adaptation of five of Jean Shepherds short stories. The collection was titled, A Christmas Story. This collection has also been released as an audio book, read by Dick Cavett.
If you have never seen the movie, A Christmas Story, perhaps this is the year that you can make this fun, entertaining film a part of your Christmas repertoire. Come on I triple dog dare you!

A CHRISTMAS STORY
Though I don't think this film was very
popular when it first came out, it is now a cult classic with good reason. I
look forward to the holiday season a little bit more because I know this will

time out of your busy schedule and experience the joys of Christmas through
Ralphie's eyes. You won't be disappointed.
